Mixing old with new, traditional with strikingly modern, Amman is certainly a city of contrasts. As the capital city of the Arab nation of Jordan, you can expect hot, dry summers and cool winters; the Mediterranean climate means there is little rainfall. Built on hilly terrain, you can be sure of a spectacular panorama wherever you're based.
Queen Alia International Airport is about 10 miles south of Amman. Taxis operate 24 hours a day and prices are fixed at JD35 for 30 minute journey (the currency is Jordan Dinar, which converts to around £32). Express buses run every 30 minutes and take you to Abdali (midtown Amman) costing JD1.500 per person and JD0.250 for each item of luggage.
In homage to the location, it would be rude not to take advantage of the beneficial qualities of the world's oldest natural spa, the Dead Sea, and where best to indulge than the magnificent Kempinski Hotel. Here, you'll be pampered, polished and perfectly spoiled for the duration of your holiday; with the private waterfalls and lagoons you'll never want to leave! For a cheaper option try the newly built and perfectly situated Ibis Amman, where the quality of service contradicts the low price, the staff are extremely friendly and the room is clean and comfortable.
The downtown area of the city is where you'll find the more traditional and historical sites like the ancient roman amphitheatre, which is believed to date back to 169 - 177 AD. Citadel Hill is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited places and significantly, home of the Temple of Hercules. It's a good place to start your tour of this historic capital. Visit the National Archaeological Museum and view the famous Dead Sea Scrolls as well as other wonderful artefacts.
Lebanese cuisine is a joy; the traditional Fatteh (Fattet Makadem - chick peas with fresh lamb and yoghurt on toasted bread) at the ambient Fakhr El Din restaurant is simply divine. Go to the well-hidden but funky Jafra where you can make your own Turkish coffee, definitely an experience. And, try the Kunaafa at Habeebah, a deliciously sweet delicacy made from cheese, pastry and syrup.
